Hi, Can anybody help me with trying to find a suitable pillow ? I have osteo in my neck and over the years I have "killed" (my wifes word) many pillows. What I am looking for is a single pillow that is quite firm. I have tried the shaped ones and they do not last long, I have tried rather expensive ones too but after a couple of weeks they do not give the support I need. Any help would be appreciated.
John.

Hi John
Great to see you on here. How are things (apart from the sleeping probs)? Hope things are going well for you.
I have a memory foam pillow which was expensive to purchase, but once I got used to it, is the most confortable pillow I have had. Have you been around the bedding departments and asked to try the pillows out?
Take care
Jeanx

Good idea, Dorothy. Didn't realise memory foam came in different "softnesses"! Mine is quite hard but I sometimes long for a softer one when the old shoulders are playing up x

I had problems with my neck last year. I would wake up with pains shooting up my skull; and neck and shoulders aching. I knew it was my pillows in bed. Kept buying pillows, but until you've tried them you don't know if they are alright for you and pillows are something that you can't take back to a shop and get your money back once used. I have now got so many pillows stuffed in my spare wardrobe.
I did mention this to my OT and the following appointment she had a variety of pillows from the back clinic for me to try on a bed. The one that I liked the most was this called Royal Rest Pillows (have tried to put link up but it didn't work) expensive, but I would think that we are V.A.T. exempt.
Was still worried about spending that sort of money only after laying on it for a few minutes. A few days later we went to Ikea and they sold the same sort of pillow (not so big) for around £15, I think they had different softness. I got one and I love it, my neck and shoulders are support and I now have no pain on waking. Took a bit of getting use to.
I think Lidl have some sort of offer on this week for shaped pillows. Think the are £6.99, not sure if they are memory foam ones.

Hi, Thank you all very much. I actually have an appointment with the nurse next week, It's about me starting one of the biological drugs, Simponi I believe has been recommended by the consultant, I will ask her advice while I am there. I do like the idea of the memory pillow, if its not too deep and as long as it is quite firm. John.

I have a memory foam pillow that I bought at Homebase years ago. It is average/medium hard for memory foam and I put a thinner (cheap) pillow on top of it, which seems to work really well for me. When the thinner pillow gets all lumpy I go and buy another cheap one!! The memory foam one underneath seems to give me really good support... it is a shaped one. It doesn't seem to ever wear out!! I have a brilliant pillow for osteoarthritis in my neck. I bought it from a disability shop. It is shaped to go right up in the crook of the neck and is so supportive and comfortable. i can't sleep with any other pillow now as nothing helps like this one. It's made by Putnams and I think it cost about £30. Money well spent.

Hi, Once again thank you all. I have just purchased a memory foam pillow from an orthopaedic company on-line. It offers a 90 day money back guarantee. Very good reviews etc. Paid a bit more than I normally do, (£34), but if it lasts longer than 6 months it will have been well worth it ! I knew If I asked that the community would help.

Hi John Glad you got one. I use a memory foam pillow (firm), wouldn't be without it now, it did take a couple of nights to get used to it. So give it a good go. Hope you get a comfortable nights sleep. Mary

Hi all, Just a quick update, Got my pillow, it's quite firm but I like that. It's a bit shallow without a "booster" so I have placed a small slim pillow under it and so far it is very good. We shall see over the coming week's whether it was worth the money ! John

Hi all, well It was not easy, sore necks and cramp in the shoulder but at last I seem to have got there. I just use the pillow itself with my head on the " high " side and I now find it quite comfortable. Though I must admit with the cost at £35 my wife was Quite insistent that it was going to work !! it's no wonder they give you a help line number.

Hi Dorothy, I have been quite poorly this last month, I have had my steroids greatly reduced and been told to lose some weight ! (I have lost 1 1/2 stone) by my new consultant. As you can imagine I have not been fit for any thing so please excuse my late reply. Thank you very much for your lovely advice, I admit me and the pillow are still not bosom buddies and my good lady insists, "IT WILL WORK", after all the others I have mis-used in the past. John.
